Outbreaks occur as a result of doctors and nurses reusing syringes, contaminating the saline bag with the blood of multiple patients.

Multiple patients should be cohorted (sequestered) to a separate building or a ward with an isolated air-handling system.

In most occasions, multiple patients must be treated at once and even more patients may be brought in over time.
