Savanna-dwelling populations have declined by 30 percent in just the last seven years, and forest elephant numbers plunged a staggering 62 percent from 2002 to 2013.

At first thought to be a mammoth, it later turned out on further analysis, specifically of the teeth, to be a young forest elephant.

Beyond the teeming bird life, expect to see forest elephants, red river hogs, surfing hippos and perhaps even the odd gorilla.

Due to a rapid loss of their habitat, forest elephants have been restricted to a mere 6-7 per cent of their historic range.

Although smaller than the savannah elephant, forest elephants are prized by poachers because of their straight tusks and fine ivory.
