The government was criticized for allowing the gas and electricity networks to make excessive profits at the expense of consumers.

National Grid is standing by to reduce the voltage passing through the electricity network to keep the system working when power demand is at its highest.

The electricity network will also need to be radically overhauled and upgraded.
