It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane’s black box.

The images of the seabed are gathered by sonar devices coasting at walking pace, less than 100 metres above the ocean floor.

Today, explorers use magnetometers that can detect buried metal, sonar devices, hydraulic dredges, and machines called prop-wash deflectors that help blast sand off the ocean floor.
