Outside, a lawned terrace overlooks 7,000 acres of oak and beech forest stretching as far as the eye can see.

In some places there are patches of original or replanted beech forest.

Further upstream the river flows through unmodified beech forest.

The 3.5-hectare area contains several buildings and scientific instruments surrounded by beech forest.

Many old beech trees can be found around the edge of the loch - remnants of a beech forest that once covered the area.
