(tōkvĭl, tŏk-, tôk-vēl), Alexis Charles Henri Clérel de 1805-1859. French politician, traveler, and historian. After touring the United States (1831-1832), he wrote Democracy in America (1835-1840), a widely influential study of American institutions.
