An island of Trinidad and Tobago in the southeast West Indies northeast of Trinidad. Originally inhabited by Caribs, the island was held as a colony at various times by the Dutch, Spanish, British, and French before being finally ceded to Britain in 1814. Tobago was united (1898) with Trinidad to form the colony of Trinidad and Tobago, which gained independence in 1962.
