释义 | Chech·nya (chĕchnē-ə, chĕch-nyä) A region of southwest Russia in the northern Caucasus bordering on Georgia. Conquered by Russia in the 19th century, it later formed part of a semiautonomous republic within the USSR. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Chechnya declared its independence from Russia, but after two wars (1994-1996 and 1999-2000), Russian troops regained control of most of the region.
