(kə-lābrē-ə, kä-läbrē-ä) A region of southern Italy forming the toe of the Italian "boot." Founded as a Greek colony, it was subsequently held by Rome, the Byzantine Empire, the Normans, and the kingdom of Naples before becoming part of a united Italy in 1861.
