(bŏthwĕl′, -wəl, bŏth-), Fourth Earl of. Title of James Hepburn. 1536?-1578. Scottish Protestant nobleman and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots who was suspected of plotting the murder of her second husband, Lord Darnley (1567). Soon after wedding Mary he fled Scotland, was captured, and died in a Danish prison.
