American family of journalists, including Robert Wilson Patterson (1850-1910), editor in chief of the Chicago Tribune (1899-1910); his son Joseph Medill Patterson (1879-1946), who founded (1919) the New York Daily News; and his daughter Eleanor Medill Patterson (1884-1948), who founded (1939) the Washington Times-Herald.
