A city of southern California east of Los Angeles at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains, a range on the southern edge of the Mojave Desert rising to 3,505 m (11,499 ft). The city was founded by Mormons in 1851 on the site of a Spanish mission (established 1810) and grew as an agricultural center.
