(rə-stôf) also Ros·tov-on-Don (-ŏn-dŏn, -dôn, -ôn-) A city of southwest Russia on the Don River near its outlet on an arm of the Sea of Azov. The city grew around a fortress built in 1761 and was chartered in 1797.
