North Ossetia or A·la·nia

(ä-länyä) A semiautonomous region of southwest Russia in the central Caucasus bordering on Georgia. Annexed by Russia in the early 1800s, it later comprised the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the USSR (1936-1991).
