An island in the Irish Sea off the northwest coast of England. Occupied in the 9th century by Vikings, it passed from Norway to Scotland in 1266 and to English feudal rule in the 1300s. Parliament purchased the island in 1765, and it remains an autonomous possession of the British crown.
