(ăkrə, ə-krä) The capital and largest city of Ghana, in the southeast part of the country on the Gulf of Guinea. Originally the capital of a small tribal kingdom, it became an important economic center after the completion in 1923 of a railroad to mining and agricultural regions in the country's interior.
