[mod. irreg. f. L. dēcip-ĕre to deceive, with ending of sodium, potassium, cerium, etc.]
A supposed rare metallic element of the cerium earth group.
Its oxide, decipia, was discovered by Delafontaine in 1878 in the samarskite of North Carolina, and the iodate, sulphate, and other salts have been prepared. On the supposition that decipia, of which the molecular weight is 390, is Dp2O3, it is inferred that decipium is a triad element of atomic weight 171.
