accelerin, n. Physiol. Brit. |əkˈsɛlərɪn|, |akˈsɛlərɪn|, U.S. |əkˈsɛlər(ə)n| [‹ acceler- (in accelerate v.) + -in suffix1. Compare slightly earlier proaccelerin n. at pro- prefix2 Affix 1.] A blood clotting factor which participates in the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. Accelerin was originally thought to be formed from factor V, proaccelerin, as a distinct factor, and was provisionally called factor VI; it is now recognized to be the activated form of factor V.
1951P. A. Owren in Proc. 3rd Internat. Congr. Internat. Soc. Hematol. 379, I wish to propose the terms proaccelerin and accelerin instead of Factor V and Factor VI, because..these factors constitute the system which is responsible for the acceleration of thrombin formation. 1959Science 13 Feb. 389/3 Optimal quantities..were added to such plasma immediately before the test, as sources of platelet prothromboplastic-factor-like activity and of accelerin. 1996Human Reprod. 11 280 Due to a new test procedure (accelerin inactivation test), the diagnosis was possible even under anticoagulation treatment. |
