[Fr. (être sur son dada, ride one's hobby-horse); title of a review which appeared at Zürich first in 1916, founded by Tzara (a Romanian poet), Arp (an Alsatian German artist), and Huelsenbeck (a German poet).]
Applied to an international movement in art and literature, characterized by a repudiation of traditional conventions and reason, and intended to outrage and scandalize. Hence ˈDadaism, the theory or practice of this movement. So ˈDadaist(e n. and a., Dadaˈistic, Dadaˈistical adjs. (Also with lower-case initials.)
