Gr. ἀκανθο- combining form of ἄκανθα thorn, as in ἀκανθο-ϕόρος thorn-bearing; hence in many modern compounds with sense of ‘thorn, thorny.’ acanˈthodian |-ˈəʊd-|, earlier also -ean, a. and n., (of) a small spiny-finned, shark-like fossil fish of the genus Acanthodes found esp. in rocks of the Devonian period.
