cyclopentadiene, n. Chem. Brit. |ˌsʌɪkləʊpɛntəˈdʌɪiːn|, U.S. |ˈsaɪkloʊˌpɛn(t)əˈdaɪˌin| [‹ cyclo- comb. form + penta- comb. form + di- prefix1 + -ene comb. form, after German Cyclopentadiën (G. Kraemer & A. Spilker 1896, in Berichte der Deutsch. chem. Ges. 29 554).] A liquid unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon, C5H6, that is formed as a by-product of the cracking of petroleum, readily reacts to produce a solid dimer, and is used in the manufacture of synthetic resins and in organic syntheses. Also: a substituted derivative of this compound. Cf. cyclopentadienyl n. Unlike the cyclopentadienyl anion, the cyclopentadiene molecule is non-planar and not aromatic.
