The implement used in the game of lacrosse for catching and throwing the ball, consisting of a long shank curved round at the end, with a net stretched across from the curve to the shank. Also called lacrosse-stick.
1867Ball Players' Chron. 20 June 5/4 It is played with a ‘crosse’, each player carrying one. 1892Photogr. Ann. II. 51 We remember at a lacrosse match taking a shot at the moment a goal was scored, and the ‘crosses’ were being shied into the air by the jubilant scorers. 1909Westm. Gaz. 23 Sept. 12/3 French is a fine sturdy player, but he is inclined to use only one hand on his crosse.
