spinulosin Biochem.|spaɪnjʊˈləʊsɪn| [f. mod.L. spīnulōs-us, specific epithet of the fungus from which it was first isolated (see spinulose a.): see in1.] A purple-black crystalline benzoquinone derivative, C8H8O5, which is produced in cultures of the moulds Penicillium spinulosum and Aspergillus fumigatus.
1938Anslow & Raistrick in Biochem. Jrnl. XXXII. 689 Birkinshaw & Raistrick (1931) reported the isolation from cultures of strains in the Penicillium spinulosum Thom series of a new mould metabolic product which was unnamed at that time, but for which the name spinulosin is now proposed. 1946[see fumigatin]. 1950L. F. & M. Fieser Org. Chem. (ed. 2) xxxii. 770 Spinulosin..has been prepared from fumigatin by Thiele addition of acetic anhydride, hydrolysis of the resulting tetraacetate, and oxidation. 1979Biol. Abstr. LXVII. 6332/2 A strain of A. fumigatus (Fresenius)..was grown on a culture medium with added saccharose. The synthesis of..spinulosin was studied under many different temperature, pH and inoculum conditions. |
