ablaut Philol.|ˈablaʊt| [mod.G., f. ab off + laut sound.] Vowel permutation; systematic passage of the root vowel into others in derivation, as in sing, sang, song, sung, apart from the phonetic influence of a succeeding vowel as in umlaut.
