▪ I. ‖ souple [F. souple supple a.] A fabric made of silk which has been freed from gum by a simple boiling-off. Also souple silk. Hence ˈsoupling vbl. n., the act or process of partially degumming raw silk which is to be made into souple silk.
1887Encycl. Brit. XXII. 62/2 For..making of gauzes, crapes, flour-bolting cloth, and for what is termed ‘souples’—the silk is not scoured. 1888A. Sansone Dyeing I. viii. 159 Souple Silk, silk which only loses 5 to 8 per cent of its weight, and is consequently not completely deprived of its gum. Ibid. 160 Soupling: Work 1½ hours in water, containing 3 to 4 grains of cream of tartar per litre. 1927Horsfall & Lawrie Dyeing Textile Fibres x. 283 In the case of degumming for souple silk, the object is to remove only a portion of the gum...
