raffinate|ˈræfɪneɪt| [ad. G. or F. raffinat, f. G. raffinieren (F. raffiner) to refine + -at -ate1 (as in distillate, filtrate, etc.).] The refined fraction which results after removal of impurities by solvent extraction, spec. in oil refining. Also attrib. The term was first used in oil refining, in connection with the solvent extraction process invented by the Romanian chemical engineer L. Edeleanu and introduced on a commercial scale at Rouen c 1911.
