a. A commanding officer, a commander: irrespective of rank. Applied esp. to the military governor of a fortress, town, or district, and often as a foreign title, French, Spanish, or Portuguese. Used in the wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45 as the title of an officer holding a special command, as of a place, depot, or the like, or of a particular force.
