1. A small bell, a hand-bell, used for ecclesiastical purposes, or by a bellman. Also transf., a scolding, railing woman.
Also, ‘a sort of iron rattle, used for the same purpose as a hand-bell, for making proclamations on the street’ (Jamieson).
