1901H. Louis in Trans. Inst. Mining & Metallurgy X. 49, I have of late years adopted a very convenient Scandinavian word, skarn, for the zone of altered rock, usually calcareous, that contains such minerals as epidote, schorl, idocrase, at times augite, hornblende, mica, etc., and I speak of these altered rocks as epidote skarn, etc. 1911Econ. Geol. VI. 708 Very characteristic of this zone, especially in connection with ore deposits, are the ‘scarn’ rocks—iron-rich silicate rocks produced by the addition of iron and silica to limestones. 1932A. Harker Metamorphism ix. 129 The skarn type of metasomatism is found at numerous British localities, but usually as a narrow belt and with little of the impregnation with sulphides. 1954Econ. Geol. XLIX. 633 The skarn is a hard dense green rock characterized by the presence of quartz, green ferro-magnesian silicates..and garnet. 1966[see sakhaite]. 1978[see serendibite]. |
