The plant Alchemilla vulgaris, common Lady's mantle.
In Lyte (1578) and Parkinson (1640) as a German name only. In quot. 1621 the plant sundew may be intended.
1548Turner Names Herbes (E.D.S.) 82 Alchimilla, other wyse called Pes leonis, is called in english our Ladies Mantel or syndow. 1562― Herbal iii. (1568) 24 Alchimilla is named in English syndaw, and oure ladies mantil. 1621Burton Anat. Mel. ii. iv. i. iii. (1651) 369 Bernardus Penottus prefers his Herba solis, or Dutch-Sindaw, before all the rest in this disease. |
