† sindaw Obs. rare. Also 6 syndow, -daw. [ad. G. sindau (also sinnau, sinau), f. sin- always (cf. sengreen) + dau dew.] The plant Alchemilla vulgaris, common Lady's mantle. In Lyte (1578) and Parkinson (1640) as a German name only. In quot. 1621 the plant sundew may be intended.

(1568) 24 Alchimilla is named in English syndaw, and oure ladies mantil. 1621Burton Anat. Mel. ii. iv. i. iii. (1651) 369 Bernardus Penottus prefers his Herba solis, or Dutch-Sindaw, before all the rest in this disease. |
