simpsonite Min.|ˈsɪmpsənaɪt| [f. the name of E. S. Simpson (1875–1939), Australian mineralogist + -ite1.] An oxide essentially of aluminium and tantalum, approximately Al4Ta3O13(F,OH), found as colourless hexagonal crystals externally altered to a dull cream.
1939H. Bowley in Jrnl. R. Soc. W. Australia XXV. 89 This was sufficient to indicate that it was a mineral not previously recorded so it was decided to give it the name Simpsonite in honour of Dr. E. S. Simpson.., who..has made many outstanding contributions to our knowledge of Western Australian minerals, particularly..tantalum⁓bearing minerals. 1959Mineral. Abstr.
