chorismic, a. Biochem.|kəˈrɪzmɪk| [f. Gr. χωρισµός separation + -ic.] chorismic acid, a hydro-aromatic acid, C6H5(OH)(COOH)·O·C(CH2)COOH , which is formed from shikimic acid in bacteria, fungi, and higher plants as a precursor of aromatic amino acids.
1964M. I. & F. Gibson in Biochem. Jrnl. XC. 249/1 As a result of this work a substance with the properties expected..was isolated, identified and named ‘chorismic acid’. 1968A. White et al. Princ. Biochem. (ed. 4) xxiv. 573 As indicated in the figure, chorismic acid..is a branch point in the synthesis of the aromatic amino acids; conversion to anthranilic acid leads to tryptophan synthesis, while transformation to prephenic acid provides a precursor of phenylalanine and tyrosine. 1992Jrnl. Org. Chem. LVII. 178 The mechanism of chorismate mutase, the enzyme which catalyzes the Claisen arrangement of chorismic to prephenic acid, remains a fascinating area for bioorganic research. |
