chikungunya, n.|tʃɪkʊŋˈgʊnjə| [Bantu, prob. Makonde; cf. Yao chi- noun prefix + kunguna to bend, stoop. The word is said to mean ‘that which folds up’.] A mosquito-borne viral disease of tropical Africa and southern Asia, marked by fever and joint pains of crippling intensity.
