† sheer-point Obs. rare. (Origin and meaning obscure.) Cf. Lisle's expressions on pp. 433–4: ‘a hard thundershower, which went to the roots of the corn’; ‘a moderate rain.., enough to go to the roots of the corn’; ‘one moderate shower..which went not to the roots of the corn’.
