Chautauqua orig. and chiefly U.S.|tʃɔːˈtɔːkwə| Also chautauqua. [The name of a county and lake in the southwestern part of the state of New York.] 1. Used esp. attrib. to designate a system of home study originating with summer schools held at Chautauqua, or the organization resulting from this, established by charter in 1871.
