‖ charpie|ˈʃɑːpiː, ʃarpi| Also -pee. [Fr.; pa. pple. fem. of OF. charpir to card: see carpet.] Old linen unravelled into short ends of thread for surgical dressings; ‘very narrow, thread-like strips of linen torn off so as to leave fringed edges’.
