[Partial translation of MHG. schaltbaum (or MLG. schaldbôm) pole used as an oar or a rudder, f. schalten (MLG. schalden) to push, shove + baum (see beam n.); the Ger. word was also adopted in the 14th c. as scheltbeme sheltbeam. (Some of the spellings in the examples below may however represent G. schalter, used in the same sense.)] A pole (? used for propelling vessels).
