quadrathlon, n. Brit. |kwɒdˈraθlən|, |kwɒdˈraθlɒn|, U.S. |kwɑdˈræθ(ə)ˌlɑn| [‹ quadri- comb. form + ancient Greek ἆθλον contest (see athlete n.), after pentathlon n., decathlon n., etc. The word is a hybrid formation, combining a first element ultimately of Latin origin with a second element ultimately of Greek origin, and was perhaps deliberately coined in distinction to earlier tetrathlon n., which usually denotes a different set of four sporting events.] Any of various athletic or sporting contests in which competitors take part in four successive events, usually running, swimming, cycling, and canoeing.
