cauterize, v.|ˈkɔːtəraɪz| Also -ise. [= F. cautériser, ad. late L. cautērizāre to burn or brand with a hot iron, f. cautērium, ad. Gr. καυτήριον branding-iron.] 1. Med. trans. To burn or sear with a hot iron or a caustic.
