‖ cathisma|kəˈθɪzmə| Pl. cathismata. [a. Gr. κάθισµα seat, f. κατά down + ἵζειν to sit.] In the Greek Church: a portion of the psalter, containing from three to eleven psalms. Also, a short hymn used as a response.
