A micaceous aluminosilicate of manganese of a copper-red colour, probably an altered form of biotite.
1894A. H. Chester in Trans. N.Y. Acad. Sci. XIII. 183 Inasmuch as these results seem to justify the view that it is a new mineral species, I propose for it the name Caswellite. 1896Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXX. ii. 309 It is supposed that the caswellite has been derived by the local action of water containing manganese and calcium on this biotite. 1966Amer. Min. LI. 1120 The name caswellite has since been applied more specifically..to the garnet pseudomorphs themselves... The name caswellite lacks species or varietal significance and should be abandoned. |
