The name of Stanislao Cannizzaro (1826–1910), Italian chemist, used attrib. or in the possessive of a reaction of aldehydes with caustic alkali (see quot. 1964).
1912Chem. Abstr. 1431 The conversion of aromatic aldehydes by alcoholates into acids and alcs. (Cannizaro's reaction) is found to be untenable. 1964N. G. Clark Mod. When aldehydes containing no hydrogen atoms on the α-carbon atom (adjacent to the functional group) are treated in the cold with concentrated aqueous or alcoholic sodium hydroxide, a dismutation involving two molecules takes place. One molecule is reduced to the alcohol, while the other is oxidized to a salt of the corresponding carboxylic acid. |
