ˈseed-cake
A cake flavoured with caraway seeds and more or less sweetened. Cf. cake n. 1 c.
The ‘seed-cakes’ formerly eaten at the rustic festival celebrating the end of sowing-time may have been of this kind, though the custom prob. had an allusive reference to seed n.
Warton's statement (quoted in the 1878 ed. of Tusser) that the name was applied to the festival itself, seems doubtful; cf., however, quot. 1726.
