‖ purusha, n. Hindu Philos.|ˈpuruʃə| Also 8 Pŏŏrŏŏsh, 9– puruṣa. [Skr. puruṣa, lit. ‘man’: in Hindu mythology, a being sacrificed by the gods in order to create the universe.] The universal spirit or soul; spec. in the Sankhya philosophy, the animating principle which, with cosmic matter (*prakriti n.), gives rise to the material, sentient universe.
