Free from payment of ‘scot’, tavern score, fine, etc.; exempt from injury, punishment, etc.; scatheless. Almost exclusively predicative; esp. in the phrase to go scot free.
In the mod. use of the expression, ‘scot’ is probably often interpreted as a mere intensive.
