The sense seems to require a fem. rather than a dim. formation, but it is not easy to explain -ing as a fem. suffix, as carling (carline1), the only example of the fem. ending -ing, is purely northern. But Chaucer or his scribe may have been familiar with the Du. and LG. suffix -in.]
