preˈstressed, ppl. a. [f. prec. + -ed1.] Previously subjected to stressing; into which stress has been deliberately introduced during manufacture; spec. of concrete: reinforced by steel rods or wires which have been tensioned while the concrete is setting, so that after setting they tend to compress the concrete and thereby strengthen it.
