A hot, dry, föhn-type wind of desert origin, freq. strong and dust-laden, which blows on the coastal plain of southern California after being channelled and heated adiabatically during its descent of the Santa Ana Mountains. Also Santa Ana wind.
The suggestion made in some dicts. that this is named after Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (?1795–1876), Mexican revolutionary leader and president, seems without foundation.
