The name (first recorded by writers of the sixth century b.c.) for a sibilant (Ϻ) found in early Doric scripts (later displaced by sigma), which has been compared with various Semitic sibilants and sampi.

A Japanese honorific title, equivalent to Mr., Mrs., etc., suffixed to personal or family names as a mark of politeness; also colloq. or in imitation of the Japanese form, suffixed to other names or titles (cf. mama-san).
When suffixed to a female personal name, and in more polite endearment, san is often coupled with the prefix O- (see quot. 1922).
