A classical dance form originating in Southern India, traditionally performed by a solo dancer with instrumental and sometimes vocal accompaniment, and consisting of rhythmic, expressive, and narrative elements. Cf. nritta n., nritya n., natya n. Cf. also nautch n.
The dance form (with the Tamil name catir) was originally practised at the court of the Marathas of Tanjore. In the 1930s it was reinvented as Bharatanatyam (Tamil paratanāṭṭiyam).
